What is a urologist?
A urologist is a doctor who specializes in diagnosing and treating conditions and diseases of the urinary tract. This includes the kidneys, ureter, bladder, urethra and adrenal glands for both men and women and the reproductive tract in men.
Urological diagnostic services
Doctors use many different tests to diagnose urinary tract diseases, including urine tests, blood tests and physical exams. Depending on your condition, doctors may order some or all of these tests to determine the cause.
Cystoscopy
A cystoscopy is a diagnostic procedure that uses a small camera attached to a thin, lighted tube to examine the bladder. It may be performed to ensure the inside of the urethra and bladder are healthy.
An abnormal cystoscopy reading may indicate the presence of bladder stones, cysts, polyps, irritable bladder, traumatic injury, tumors, ulcer, enlarged prostate and other abnormalities.
Urological treatments
Depending on test results, our urology specialists may be able to treat patients surgically to treat the condition. Treatments include:
- Transurethral resection of the prostate and bladder — This incision-free surgical procedure cuts away excess tissue sections.
- Neobladder reconstruction — A surgical procedure to construct a new way for urine to exit your body (urinary diversion). After bladder removal surgery (cystectomy) for bladder cancer or another condition, as one option, a surgeon trained in advanced robotic techniques can perform bladder reconstruction, otherwise known as orthotopic neobladder reconstruction. During the procedure, your surgeon uses a piece of the intestine to create a new bladder that allows you to urinate voluntarily and maintain continence.

- Extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy — Used to treat kidney stones
- Penile implants — Used to treat erectile dysfunction
- Nephrectomy — Removal of all or part of the kidney
