MountainView Hospital, Southern Hills Hospital and Sunrise Hospital & Medical Center have received approval from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education to join forces under the Sunrise Health Graduate Medical Education Consortium.
Under the newly accredited Sunrise Health GME Consortium, existing programs Internal Medicine, Emergency Medicine, General Surgery, OB-GYN and Transitional Year will remain based at MountainView Hospital, with rotations at Sunrise Hospital & Medical Center for General Surgery and Emergency Medicine. The Family Medicine program will remain based at Southern Hills Hospital.
Combining the programs under one umbrella allows for more flexibility in the residency program and for residents to easily access all Sunrise Health facilities in Las Vegas for training.
“This is an important step for graduate medical education program development in Las Vegas,” said Jeremy Bradshaw, MountainView Hospital Chief Executive Officer. “This will allow for easier access of our residents to all of the Sunrise Health facilities for the purpose of quality medical education and program development.”
As part of this announcement, new Assistant Designated Institutional Officials (DIO) were appointed for the market and for each facility in addition to a new Far West Division Director and Consortium Director of GME:
Dr. Ferenc Puskas, Assistant DIO, MountainView Hospital
Dr. Maureen Strohm, Assistant DIO, Southern Hills Hospital
Dr. Jeff Murawsky, Assistant DIO, Sunrise Hospital
Fran DeYoung, FWD Division Administrative Director of Graduate Medical Education
Daisy Rosado, Consortium Administrative Director
“I am excited that we are combining our efforts to provide the highest educational experience for our residents,” said Adam Rudd, Southern Hills Chief Executive Officer. “The consortium allows our residents to move throughout our system, experiencing the different dynamics of healthcare throughout the valley.”
The Sunrise Health GME Consortium at MountainView Hospital launched in 2015 and welcomed its first class of residents in 2016. Among its accredited graduate programs, Sunrise Health GME Consortium has residency positions based at MountainView and at Southern Hills. Additional programs are being explored that will help compliment the physician base currently in Southern Nevada.
Nevada currently ranks 48th in the nation in the number of physicians per capita, at 218 physicians per 100,000 of the population, according to a 2012 study by the Association of American Medical Colleges. The national average is 307. Historically there have not been enough residency programs to meet the demand of medical students graduating from Nevada’s medical schools. Providing residency programs to retain and attract new physicians is integral to increasing the physician base in the state.
