Hospital raises awareness of lung cancer during the Great American Smokeout
Las Vegas, NV — Sunrise Hospital is proud to introduce a new lung cancer screening program to the community. To promote early detection and increase the chances for long-term survival, the Lung Cancer Screening Program at Sunrise offers low-cost CT scans of the lungs for high-risk individuals.
Today also marks the American Cancer Society’s 36th Great American Smokeout—a day to encourage smokers to quit smoking or make a plan to quit smoking in the near future. Sunrise Hospital, which recently became a tobacco-free campus on July 1, 2011, developed this program to raise awareness and early detection of lung cancer in the community.
Known as the silent killer, most cases of lung cancer are found in later stages, when treatment is less successful. Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related death for both men and women, with approximately 222,000 new cases diagnosed in the U.S. each year, according to the American Cancer Society.
According to the National Lung Screening Trial (NLST), the use of spiral CT may reduce mortality rates by 20 percent rather than the conventional chest X-ray in older current or former heavy smokers. The National Cancer Institute (NCI) and its partners conducted this trial to obtain the most reliable results possible about the potential benefits of lung cancer screening. The results of this study have provided sufficient evidence of the benefits of utilizing the CT scan to detect lung cancer.
