A team of surgeons and other physicians at Sunrise Hospital in Las Vegas performed a unique procedure on a young Las Vegas woman on Dec. 31, 2012. The team of physicians performed a procedure to remove a large benign tumor from the spine of a patient. The tumor, which is about the size of a grapefruit, put extreme pressure on her spine and she was unable to walk because of the tumor.
Once the tumor was removed, the neurosurgeon who led the team, Dr. Yevgeniy Khavkin, reconstructed the patient’s spine. This was the first time this procedure was performed in Southern Nevada and only about a half-dozen hospitals in the country perform this type of procedure.
If the young woman didn’t have this procedure it is likely the tumor would keep her from walking. It was a complicated procedure, but the patient is recovering well. This new year brought with it a new beginning for this patient.
Dr. Khavkin’s wife, an ENT, and his brother, an anesthesiologist, were also part of the team in the Operating Room at Sunrise for this procedure.
It’s the kind of procedure for which patients may have had to leave the Las Vegas area in the past, because only a handful of hospitals perform such a surgery. But not anymore. Now it can be done right here in Las Vegas, at Sunrise Hospital.
