Today HCA announced the appointment of Sylvia Young, current President of the Sunrise Health System in Las Vegas, as President of HCA’s Continental Division, effective June 1. Sylvia has served as President of the Sunrise Health System, which includes Sunrise Hospital, Sunrise Children’s Hospital, MountainView Hospital and Southern Hills Hospital, since 2007.
The Continental Division comprises seven Denver-area hospitals in the HealthONE system and Wesley Medical Center and Galichia Heart Hospital in Wichita, Kansas. It also includes 15 surgery centers and dozens of other outpatient centers in Colorado and Wichita. This appointment marks a return to Denver for Young, who served in various hospital leadership roles there from 1985 to 2007.
"Sylvia has been a great leader for our system of hospitals in Las Vegas and her record of achievement is remarkable," said Bryan R. Rogers, President of HCA’s Far West Division, which includes hospitals in Nevada and California. "While we congratulate her on her new role as Continental Division president, we will miss her leadership and thank her for all she has accomplished for our patients, hospitals and the community."
As president of the Sunrise Health System, Sylvia oversaw a network of hospitals that provided care to people throughout the Southwest. Under her leadership, the Sunrise Health hospitals have received numerous awards and accreditations, including recognition from U.S. News and World Report for the top hospital in Las Vegas, recognition for two of the system’s hospitals as "Top Performers" by the Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Facilities, the "Best Hospital" designation in the Las Vegas Review-Journal’s Best of Las Vegas readers’ poll, and the Las Vegas area’s Consumer Choice Award winner for 15 consecutive years.
In addition, the system features the state’s first network of hospitals to receive accreditation as Chest Pain Centers from the national Society of Chest Pain Centers, the state’s first network of Certified Stroke Centers from the Joint Commission, and the state’s first Gold-Plus Award winner for Stroke Care from the American Stroke Association, to name just a few honors.
Sylvia has also been recognized personally on a national scale by Modern Healthcare magazine as one of the "Top 25 Women in Healthcare in the U.S." in 2009. She has also been honored regionally, as she was named one of the 10 "Power Women of Nevada" by Nevada Business Magazine this year.
A search for her replacement is underway.
